Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens received the Garden Sustainability Award from the American Horticultural Society as part of the organization’s annual Great American Gardeners Awards.

The accolade is part of a national program that recognizes individuals and institutions for significant contributions to horticulture. The Garden Sustainability Award specifically honors a public garden that demonstrates excellence in sustainable design, maintenance and educational programming.

Phipps President and CEO Richard Piacentini said the recognition reinforces the role of public gardens in addressing ecological challenges and climate change.

“Phipps is honored to be recognized among fellow changemakers in horticulture and further inspired to continue growing a greener future for all,” Piacentini said.

The society highlighted several of the conservatory’s initiatives, including its portfolio of high-performance green buildings such as the Center for Sustainable Landscapes. The institution also maintains an adult education program featuring more than 100 courses annually and provides specialized training for landscape professionals.

Additionally, the award recognizes Phipps’ leadership of The Climate Toolkit. The collaborative network includes 256 institutions across 30 countries that share strategies to mitigate environmental impact and engage museum visitors in climate solutions.

Since 1953, the Great American Gardeners Awards have remained among the highest honors in the U.S. horticultural field, with only eight recipients selected across various categories each year.
