Toilet paper for scale. So I just leave it closed for like a 6 months and I'll see little animals? Do I need to put it in the sun or dark?

I’ve never done this before either…. but I think you need some sand too

Im also not an expert but I think you need to put some bugs inside it, mainly mosquitos

  3. That’s just a jar of water, you’re not going to see anything in there unless you’ve got a microscope, and everything beyond bacteria will die off over time most likely.

You need to take a complete slice of an ecosystem, that includes multiple layers of sediment, plants, and whatever microfauna are present in it. It will then cycle over a few weeks, before you seal it. Biodiversity trends downwards, so you want to start with as much as possible, not an empty jar.

Marine ecosystems are also far more difficult, as they tend to rely heavily on water movement, which a stagnant jar doesn’t produce. You’re better off finding a stagnant freshwater pond or something to do this.
