OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WLOX) — Garden enthusiasts from across Mississippi gathered Sunday as the Ocean Springs Garden Club hosted a patriotic gathering featuring 10 handcrafted tablescapes, each inspired by a stanza from “America the Beautiful,” ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary.

Tickets cost $25. Proceeds fund garden projects throughout the community, including the grounds outside the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Arts Center.

Club president Jane Trotter said organizing the event brought members closer together.

“I got to know one person on my team that I really had not really gotten to know because we have our meetings, then we have lunch, then we all scatter,” Trotter said. “So, that’s one really good thing is the teamwork and the camaraderie and I think that we’ve enjoyed doing this.”

The event’s featured guest was Patty Roper, an author of six books and a longtime contributor and former owner of Mississippi Magazine. Sunday marked one of her rare recent appearances. Roper has delivered 87 programs of this kind.

“We have one of our members that just loves her books,” Trotter said. “She’s an author as well. She’s written six books on decorating, food, recipes. She’s just delightful.”
