However, despite significant publicity around the potential sale, it has yet to secure a buyer. Writing in Gardeners’ World, Alan described leaving the Hampshire residence as a “wrench” but acknowledged it was “time to downsize”.

His new residence also features a new garden, spanning one-and-a-half acres. Alan reveals he is “keen to get cracking” on his new plot since moving in December.

He describes the garden woodland as “overgrown and overshadowed” and notes that “many of the rhododendrons have turned into trees”. Alan will, however, need to wait until spring to discover how much of his garden will flourish.

Writing in Gardeners’ World he acknowledges that some plants and shrubs will require being “cut back” whilst others will need to be “selectively culled”. Alan states he will discover in April, May and June which of his new plants retain the potential to bloom.

He remains uncertain, however, about when he should “crack on” and what he ought to leave untouched. Fortunately, Alan says he has identified some tasks he can tackle whilst waiting for warmer weather.

Alan has been busy creating new flower beds at the back of his property, a task he’s found “joy” in as he adjusts to his new soil type after four decades of working with chalk.

He penned: “New gardens possess so many challenges. I am monitoring the path of the sun – at its lowest at this time of year – so that plants which require sun or shade can be catered for.

“I have found the best place for a greenhouse and acquired the planning permission I need in this conservation area. (Living in terrain that is designated a National Landscape has to be a plus, but it brings with it a number of planning restrictions, which I know are in everybody’s interests).”

Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh returns to our screens from 9.30am this morning (March 8). Joining Alan will be wildlife presenter Michaela Strachan and Call the Midwife stars Annabelle Apsion and Cliff Parisi.

In addition, he’ll be chatting with a couple who’ve dedicated over five years to establishing a hedgehog hospital in their garden. Alan has been hosting the popular Sunday morning magazine show for nearly six years now.
