Weeds are a common and unruly problem to deal with in the garden, but it can be easy to get rid of them before they spread and become too wild. Although weeds grow throughout the year, growth peaks in the spring and summer months due to rising temperatures.

Between March and May is when annual weeds germinate and perennial weeds begin to wake up. Gardening expert and TikTok creator Ish urged gardeners to get ahead of growing weeds by removing them while they’re young. However, you don’t need to throw them away, as they can be used to help feed other plants in the garden.

Ish explained in the video’s caption: “Now is the perfect time to tackle those garden weeds. They’re at a vulnerable point of their growth so get them gone.

“They’re also jam packed full of nutrients so don’t let them go to waste, take that foliage and turn it into liquid feed. It’s amazing what a simple gardening tip can show you to help your garden flourish.”

Ish explained that spring is the best time to start disposing of them as the weeds are still young, and in turn, vulnerable. When weeds are in their infancy, they have a small root base, which means they haven’t spread and imposed on the surrounding crops.

The gardening expert explained that as weeds tend to use most of their energy to kickstart their growth, they’re in a vulnerable position. In this case, there’s no need for chemical weed killers to get rid of them.

Ish suggested digging up the baby weeds directly from the ground or plant pot they’re sprouting from. You can use a small trowel, or you can even remove the weeds by hand.

Take a few fingers and pinch them around as much of the root as you can and simply pull it out. Keep an eye out for any broken roots, as you don’t want these to be left behind.

Ish said: “It also means as well, by getting rid of these, you don’t have to worry about it stealing any of the nutrients in the soil, which is a double win.”

You don’t have to throw away the weeds just yet, as they have a hidden talent that can be used to help fertilise other plants in the garden. Ish recommended separating the roots from the foliage.

Fill a pot or bucket with loads of water and place all of the weeds’ foliage in with it. Leave the weeds to break down in the water for a few weeks.

Ish said: “What will happen is it will release all of the nitrogen that was stolen from the soil and put it into the water, which you can turn into a liquid feed. So it goes to show young weeds are actually a bit more practical than you realise, and easy to get rid of.”
