The weather is finally beginning to change after a dark and cold winter. Your garden is probably looking a little worse for wear, but there are a few maintenance tasks that can make a world of difference.
Painting the fence is one of these, as it instantly freshens up your outdoor space and makes it look much more cared for. This isn’t everyone’s favourite task, as it can sometimes end up patchy, faded or discoloured. But one hack makes it so much easier, and you won’t even need a paintbrush at all.
According to one viral TikTok, you can paint your garden fence panels quickly and easily with no paint splatters if you ditch the brush and use a kitchen sponge instead.
The video, posted by @reno_at_95, has racked up millions of views with thousands of likes and comments too. The clip shows the homeowner trying and failing to paint a fence with a brush, resulting in a dry and patchy finish.
Then, they pick up a sponge instead – like the kind you’d wash your car with – and dipped it in the paint.

Then, they used big sweeping strokes to spread the paint on the fence panels in a downward motion. The result was a much smoother, more even finish, with no dry spots to be seen.
Not only did the fence look much better, but this technique also eliminates those annoying paint splashes that often end up all over your clothes, hair and skin when carrying out this task.
In the video’s caption, they noted: “Fence painters out there – use a sponge NOT a brush! You can thank me later.” The comments were full of people amazed by the tip, with one writing: “As someone who needs to paint their fence…thank you.”
Before you begin, you may want to sand down the fence to ensure no splinters will get stuck on the sponge. And you might still need a small brush to reach any tough corners and ensure an even coverage.
Another tutorial shared by Clare Hooper on Instagram also went viral, again with many people singing her praises in the comments. One person wrote: “I did this at the weekend, did 6 6×6 panels in 3 hours, goes on really well, thank you for the tip.”
Another commented: “I tried this after seeing your post….it was brilliant!! So much quicker & less paint dripping everywhere.”
And a third wrote: “Been using a sponge for years.”
