Ready to make your patio pots and outdoor living spaces feel intentional (and way less chaotic)? Today we’re at John’s garden for a real-life container garden consult—planning what goes where, editing what’s no longer working, and styling the space so it looks clean, layered, and inviting all season long.
We cover a simple “one bite at a time” approach to tackling your garden: break the landscape into priority zones, clear the visual clutter first, and then build back in layers. You’ll see how pruning for light + airflow can instantly change the feel of a space, why movable pots matter more than you think, and how a little negative space can make every plant and ornament look better.
In this video, you’ll learn:
How to start a container garden refresh (without doing everything at once)
Easy “edit first” steps: remove what you know you don’t want to see what you’re working with
Why maximalists inside are maximalists outside—and how to rein it in with structure + negative space
Quick wins for a dopamine hit: cleaning garden “jewelry” (glass, metal, ornaments)
Cleaning hacks: dishwasher for bottles, soft brush for cushions/shells/tabletops, and outdoor hose + window cleaner sprayer
Pruning strategies for better shape + health: twiggy clean-up, tip pruning, limbing up crape myrtles, and canopy control
Dealing with pests like scale using season-appropriate treatments (always follow label directions)
“Steal from Peter to pay Paul” styling: repurposing planters/urns to create a stronger focal point
Choosing color with intention: greens as the base + movable pots for seasonal color that harmonizes
Featured ideas + vibes:

I’m in Ohio & we’ve had two days of ‘pushing it’ clean up days. I fully took advantage of it with my works pruners. Thank goodness tomorrow is disposal day as I do not compost. Oh how therapeutic for my mind & soul; not so much on my body (@72) day one but, so, so much better on the second day. I got rid of nasty pots/ornaments repotted into cohesive pretty agin. Trying very hard to make it easier on my own arthritic body. Like you I have you same issues with both my thumbs/hands, both joint replaced, & shoulder surgery this month. To be outside in my garden is the best medicine! Loved this inspirational video with one my favorite home & gardens.
Don’t they get mould there like I do in Louisiana?
Does anyone know what is the canopy over their heads ? Is it corrugated iron, or maybe a sail cloth? I can’t figure it out, but I like it, and would like something like that.
❤
John needs his own show
Hi! 👋
I always love to see John on the channel. As Mr. Rogers sang.. 'won't you be my neighbor'. I look forward to returning for the tour. Thank you all, Linda, John and Stuart.
Just love when John is on he is adorable and fun!!!!
Yea! We’re going in! Again! Love John’s home interiors! ❤❤❤
Thanks for all this great information, Linda. Watching the next one on pruning the boxwood. I need the tutorial 🙂
Linda aren't you in the eye of those snow storms hitting the country? Or is this video not recent?
I always like seeing you and John doing a video together. The two of you have so much fun.
I really enjoy the friendship the two of you share. You both have such beautiful, charming homes and gardens and I find such comfort and inspiration watching your content!
This video has given me spring fever, although here in the Chicago area we are nowhere near getting out into the garden! Interesting too, that you mentioned scale on your Myrtle topiaries-for the first time last year, I put mine in the garden (where they thrived), and this winter I am noticing scale. I have been battling them with alcohol and Q-tips, which, however satisfying in a way, just isn’t enough.
Love his garden ,don’t move too many things ,it’s great as it is 🥰
John and linda !! They never disappoint..❤ Zambia 🇿🇲
Love to see the gardens you visit and the inspiration that you (and we) gain from that. I love John’s garden too! I am wondering if the heavy footed planter would be a bit too heavy (weight and feel) for the table and impede guests from conversation in that garden space? Maybe considering something that is more one-man moveable would work better? ❤️
😂 “… but were you in your pajamas” Linda’s expression was priceless! 💚
I love when you have John on your videos. You two (and Stewart) always have such a great time and we always learn something!
This boy likes blue too. (Just thought it was charming that in the garden John leans toward blue, and Linda toward pink). ❤
Oh, I need help with my boxwoods too. Can't wait!
Love John’s home and garden, and the two of you together 🎉🎉🎉….and you are right John, even pulling weeds or shaping any plant is so meditative!! No need for an intervention Linda 😅. I love letting my grafted redbud seedlings come up and see what they revert to!
I absolutely love visiting John's home and garden. Looking forward to the pruning video and I need more blue wine bottles. 🍷🍷
Thank you all for a fun video! This reminds me I need to get back outside and finish my 5 rose hole digging for new bare roots plants to be here soon. Beautiful day here in NW Oregon at 58° and sunny. We have had the most wonderful sunny weather for a week. Great gardening weather. Ta ta
What type of Holly is that and how old?
I’ve always loved the covered patio that John has off his kitchen and his creative decorating!
Carolina Jasmine has a pretty yellow star shaped flower for the planter on the table…just my opinion..lol…love this, cannot wait to see the after…
The urn that you want to put on that table you wouldn’t be able to see over when you sit there
Bombay Sapphire gin bottles?
Linda & John ….. Love listening for any tips I can get. One tip for you is the way I handle my heavy oversized pots that need moved. I use Plant Caddys which are basically like plant saucers with casters on them. It enables you to roll those big pots out from where they are no longer wanted as long as you dont have to move them up or down steps. Try them out!
John! You should go for Citadelle Gin. Great bottles, average gin!
Absolutely ❤ John's house. So charming and unique. Thx for the video.
Do anybody think having a olive tree and a palm tree in big pots would look good?
John is so great. Thanks for including him
