NEW YORK CITY –
The Oklahoma City Thunder held on late to defeat the New York Knicks 103-100 Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.
The defending NBA champions led much of the fourth quarter but had to survive two final three-point attempts from New York in the closing seconds before securing the win.
Chet Holmgren delivered one of his best performances of the season, finishing with 28 points and knocking down six three-pointers to lead Oklahoma City.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 26 points, including a key step-back three-pointer with under 90 seconds remaining that helped the Thunder maintain control.
The win keeps Oklahoma City rolling as it continues to hold the best record in the NBA.
Holmgren shines in “The Garden”
Holmgren’s shooting helped stretch the Knicks defense throughout the night and proved to be a difference-maker down the stretch.
The Thunder big man said the moment meant even more given the stage.
“It’s always cool to have a good game in the Mecca,” Holmgren said. “I’ve only played here one other time, and I’d say this is definitely my best game in the Garden. On top of that, we were able to win the game.”
Holmgren’s six made three-pointers helped Oklahoma City create separation in the fourth quarter before New York rallied late.
SGA delivers late and continues historic streak
Gilgeous-Alexander once again led Oklahoma City in key moments.
His step-back three-pointer with under two minutes left pushed the Thunder lead to six points and gave OKC breathing room in the final stretch.
The reigning NBA MVP finished with 26 points and continues to climb the NBA record books.
Gilgeous-Alexander now sits just two games away from tying Wilt Chamberlain’s record for consecutive games with at least 20 points.
Knicks come up just short late
New York had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds.
Jalen Brunson missed a three-pointer from the corner, and OG Anunoby grabbed the rebound with a chance to send the game to overtime. His follow-up attempt also missed, allowing Oklahoma City to escape with the win.
The Thunder had to hold their breath on the final possession.
“You had to hold your breath on that last Knicks possession,” Thunder sideline reporter Steve McGehee said after the game.
Playing in the Garden still special for Thunder
Even with a championship roster and MVP talent, the atmosphere at Madison Square Garden remains special for players.
“The Garden is fun to play at,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “The aroma of the building, the way the court is lit up, the way the crowd is kind of darkened, it’s fun to play.”
“And then all the historic games that have happened here. It’s always a get-up game for sure.”
With the victory, Oklahoma City continues its strong road trip and maintains its grip atop the NBA standings.
