Snagged this rescue at the Kalamunda Garden Festival. Absolute unit, but it was in rough shape.

Spotted this guy on Sunday and the red flags were everywhere. Yellowing color, sitting in a puddle of mossy substrate, and a $40 price tag that felt way too good to be true if it was actually healthy.

I’m pretty new to the cacti obsession but figured I’d try a rescue mission.

Turns out the drainage was totally blocked by overgrown roots, but the previous owner had clearly been drenching it anyway. I actually had to crack the pot to get it out it was insanely root bound. I spent about 30 mins carefully hosing the dirt out of the roots since they were so tangled. Miraculously, zero rot!

Let it dry for 4 days Perth heat did most of the work for me and just repotted. Using a 50/50 mix of sifted potting soil and pumice/perlite, plus some lava rock for the base and top dressing.

Going to hold off on watering for a week. Did I miss anything??

  1. nice one!! looks great, it likely won’t even need watering after the week has passed so i would let it settle in for longer and wait for signs of thirst
