  1. Stupid. Never excavate under a tree canopy! It kills the tree! The smallest roots that take up water are under the perimeter of the tree canopy, called the drip line, where water drips off the leaves. If you cut out those roots, the tree can't uptake water, and it dies! Only excavate at least 5 – 10' beyond the drip line. For redwoods, much further.
