This is no ordinary Limited Express train. The Yakumo Limited Express that we took from Matsue in the San’s region to Okayama in the Sanyo region in Japan was totally redesigned in 2024. Our trip was about one year after its introduction. We decided to try Green Class or as the Japan Rail literature likes to call it, first class. The designer, Yasuyuku Kawanishi, took his design inspiration from the name of the train, Yakumo which means “springing clouds” and you’ll see this layout in the train’s logo and repeated as a design motif in side the train, especially semi-compartment seating area. Our Green (or first class) car was quite handsome with wide, comfortable seats finished i with a lovely orange-ish fabric. We thought the extra expense for our green car seats was well worth it, but take a look at our video and judge for yourself.

As a bonus, we will show you why the destination, Okayama is so worthwhile. We’ll take you on a tour of the peaceful Korakuen garden, dating back to the 16th Century and one of Japan’s finest gardens. Then we’ll take you on a day trip by local train to nearby Kurashiki, which is famous for its Bikan Historical District.

So join us for a spectacular Japan travel adventure!.

  1. Arigato for another enjoyable, informative video. I enjoyed seeing the gardener clipping (shaping) the large tree. It was nice to see Japanese tourists visiting the historic town. Also, a pleasure to learn how historic warehouses had been adapted for contemporary use.

  2. Enjoy the lowkey call presentation. I always learn something. Thanks for sharing. How did you pick the places you are visiting?

  3. Fun fact: Japan used to have three classes on its trains — first, second, and third class. Over time, first class was abolished. What had been second class was renamed “Green Car” (the premium seating you see today), and third class became the standard “ordinary” class. So today’s Green Car is historically closer to second class than first class.

  6. The Yakumo Express "Yakumo" refers to "Koizumi Yakumo," an American who became a naturalized Japanese citizen and is known as Patrick Lafcadio Hearn. He is known as the person who introduced Japanese ghost stories to the world. The Yakumo Express was named in honor of his achievements.

  7. Ah~, being off-the-beat tourists, you visited Matsue, and took the train down to Okayama. Kurashiki is also a real gem to visit, but not so hidden anymore.
