CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – The warmer months are approaching and homeowners are looking to turn the page on the bitter cold, making this weekend a great time for the Home & Garden Show.
With the springlike weather, many are looking for ideas for at-home projects. Some are looking to make repairs to their homes or want to have the best yard on the block.
“People are looking forward to, right now, is just getting their place ready to go for the year,” said Jack Beggs, of Jack’s Custom Landscape.
He is one of the vendors at the Home Builders and Remodelers Association Home & Garden Show at the Canfield Fairgrounds.
Beggs says many are ready to start thinking about spring, and want to get a head start on their landscapes and gardens.
“First thing to do is the clean-out of the beds. Get all the debris out of there so the plants start growing, and then fertilizer,” he said.
One of the big things is making sure plants and trees made it through the cold months. With this past winter, it may be an issue that’s more prone to happen.
“We have hard winters. Sometimes plant material might need looked at, might need some fertilizer, might need some changes, depending on if certain plants can make it through winter,” Beggs said.
But it’s not just landscapes that have people’s attention. It’s also work that needs done to their gutters and roofs.
“We’re dealing with a lot of gutter damage from ice damming over the winter. The freeze-thaw cycles were terrible for gutters. They’re also terrible for the interiors of homes, a lot of water damage,” said David Kelso, with Sky Roofing.
He says this is a common thing in Ohio. We’re still experiencing freeze-thaw cycles, which cause gutters to hang loose or nails to pop out.
“Before they do the interior work to fix the leaks inside the house, they’re going to want to make sure that the exterior is done so that doesn’t happen again,” Kelso said.
He says it’s important to make sure everything is square, especially after a snow-heavy winter.
“A lot of them are coming out just to look for replacements. It’s that time when they get up between 15 and 25 years, they want to change,” Kelso said.
The Home and Garden Show runs through Sunday.
