MILL HALL — The Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Clinton County are pleased to announce “Seed to Supper,” a comprehensive three-week course designed for novice gardeners who want to learn how to grow their own fresh vegetables.
The program will take place on three consecutive Saturday mornings: March 14, 21 and 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Classes will be held at the Mary Ann Bower Learning Center and Penn State Extension office, located at 47 Cooperation Lane, Mill Hall, Pa.
On March 14, participants will explore the foundations of healthy soil, why soil health is essential for a successful garden and how to take and interpret a soil sample. The session will also cover how to amend soil based on test results. In addition, attendees will learn the basics of garden planning, including choosing a site, understanding water needs, determining the amount of sunlight required, selecting types of vegetable gardens and practicing crop rotation by plant family.
On March 21, participants will focus on planting a garden, including the differences between seeds and transplants, as well as techniques for vertical and container gardening in small spaces. The session will also demonstrate how to plant using grow bags. Attendees will learn how to care for and maintain their gardens through proper watering, fertilizing, weeding, identifying common pests, using trap crops, recognizing plant diseases and applying Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles. Common gardening tools will also be introduced.
On March 28, participants will learn how to harvest and store their vegetables. A PSE Educator, Sarah Grimes, will share a variety of recipes that can be made with homegrown produce. Additional garden tips will be provided.
Throughout all three weeks, attendees will participate in hands-on activities, including garden planning, soil pH testing, creating seed tapes, winter sowing and weed identification.
Originally developed through a collaboration between the Oregon State Extension Master Gardeners and the Oregon Food Bank, the Seed to Supper coursebook has been specially adapted by Penn State Extension Master Gardeners to reflect Pennsylvania’s unique gardening climate and growing conditions.
The cost of the course is $10 per person, which covers the cost of all supplies. A discount is offered free of charge to veterans and adults on a low-income budget. The course is limited to 25 attendees. It is essential that you attend all three of the classes for the maximum course benefit.
