  1. Been noticing, at least in Miracle Grow bagged soil, the base component must be (mostly unscreened) top soil because it used to be loaded with woody material (mulch, tree bark) now there's actual rocks in it and not like perlite or vermiculite, but run of the mill small stones from just anywhere. I screen it anyway before use n pots, containers or even raised beds since it's usually the in-ground version they sell for $2/bag at HD during Spring Black Friday. You can definitely use it for pots, just screen it and amend with perlite and maybe some cocoa coir, but the rocks are a pain

  2. my garden is on the top of my desk in front of a sunny window. I would not use 50 gallons of seed starting mix in my life time. $6 for a small quantity would be a benefit.

  3. after starting the seeds in the custom mix (peat, perlite, lime) at what point do you feed the seedlings, and what?

  4. I use ONLY HP Promix to start seeds. Granted, there is no food in it, but you are not trying to grow a plant, only start a seed. Trying to feed something that young will damage most seedlings. The cotyledons contain enough to feed the seedling until its grows a bit.

  5. What I've been using lately is a 12 quart bag of Jiffy seed starting mix from Walmart for about $6 and then I buy the 8 quart bags of Miracle Grow perlite, also at Walmart for $6. I mix a whole bag of the seed starting mix (12 quarts) with a half bag of the perlite (4 quarts) into a bucket and mix it all up. In the end I get 16 quarts of well aerated (25% perlite) mix for roughly $9. Not too shabby IMO. The Jiffy seed starting mix also has lime in it.

  6. @8:40 my husband starts his seeds on damp paper towels inside take away containers. Then he switches the sprouts to the same type of container with the soil from our bed, (which was created through the hugelkulter method and has turned into black loamy soil) with a little extra perlite added and a Tbs of worm castings. He then plants the transplantable plants he wants in the beds, and puts the tons of extras in solo cups and gives them out to his friends that are into gardening or just starting their gardens. He has gotten a lot of his friends into gardening and helped them set up their beds or systems. They become very interested when he explains how much we save on groceries. (He has a spread sheet) 😂

  7. I started making my own a few years ago. Recently, thanks to you, I added dolomitic lime to it to reduce the acidity from the peat moss. That was a great tip!

  8. Curiously, when people compare RESULTS of these widely available seed starting mixes, the brands that cost the most, that have the reputations for must have quality, seem to have produced abysmal results. Eyeballing a seed starting mix and condemning it without trying it, and the addition of again, using a click bait SCAM title ought be beneath you.

You have the ability to do good and spread actual knowledge but over and over you get lost in fact versus fiction.

  9. I don't know if I'm the only one who feels this way , I'm have time pressure trying to get everything done. I really love your information.
It would be so helpful if we could get to the point sooner.

  10. I'm very lucky to live near a local, employee-owned store that sells locally sourced products. Last week I got a bag of "seedling mix". It's 8 dry quarts. Ingredients in order are perlite, sphagnum peat moss, coconut coir, and limestone. The cost was only $3.99. The product is so nice, I returned to get 4 more bags! They'll last me at least 2 more years.

  11. Sorry, but Promix is lacking in ALL nutrients that seedlings need. It is good at germinating seeds but not at growing them. If you end up following the advice that it is "premium", you are going to need to start fertilizing immediately after your seeds germinate, whereas, if you use a nutrient rich option, like Johnny"s 512 mix or Vermont Compost Fort Vee mix, the plants will have every bit of nutrition they need to grow into glorious, beautiful, healthy plants start to finish.

  12. Thank you, Luke❣️ Do you have a formula for a soil mix to grow microgreens? Thanks!😊

  13. I made seed starting mix out of the coco coir block that burpee makes and with some perlite and vermiculite and none of my seeds started I actually lost all the Blackout Roma seeds I purchased from you. I am on trial number 3 for starting seeds and doors this year and I normally sew directly. I should just buy the ProMix and call it a day

  14. I just picked up two of those Burpee "concentrated" seed starting "mixes," as I'm currently prepping for spring. My question is, in what universe is 100% coco coir a "mix"?

And yes, I knew exactly what I was buying. But I was definitely amused by the word "mix."

  15. Good video, I have been buying Promix HP for a few years now. Definitely worth the cost and is a fantastic seed starting mix. I have also tried Jiffy mix, miracle gro, sunshine mix #4 and others. Promix HP is definitely the best. 😊

  16. The scam? You mean herbicide residue in nearly everything? You aren't failing people, you aren't doing anything wrong. It's not overwatering , your seeds aren't bad. The products are full of herbicide residue. Please learn the signs and symptoms of herbicide residue poisoning. Especially Grazon aminopyralid residue.

  17. Luke, you are exactly right, but we have so many idiots in our country that they will believe anything that these "so-called corporations experts say". When I was younger I was told by an older gentleman that you make money on the stupidity of people.

  18. I can see the need for seed starting mix if you are starting your seeds in very small containers. I just use regular potting mix because I start my seeds in 3 inch pots to eliminate potting up and I grow so few of plants that space is no issue for me. This method saves me time, less watering, and extra expense of buying a seed starting mix.

  19. I’ve had good starts from using coco coir and “scam” mixes. Promix is the only recommendation? Makes this video seem more like a ad.

  20. Corporations look out for NUMBER 1 and don't care who they screw in the process. It's all about money, money, money. They're extremely greedy and want to line their pockets to gain more and more wealth. Just satanic all the way through.

  21. Definitely trying my own mix this year as well and going by your guidelines. Seems like to me whenever i have used store bought mixes, the seeds germ well but then after a week or two they start showing that they are clearly not happy in what they are growing in and sometimes i would even lose plants entirely in those box store seed mixes.

  22. Was at your store for the seed starting class ! Was impressed with the seed. Selection . you need to put out a catalog of all the seeds

  23. I used to like Miracle grow potting soil. But it has really gone down in quality in the last 4 years. More bark vwood chunks Nathan anything else. Many others are the same.

  24. Thank you for calling out these issues and the companies that create them! I fell for it the first time i started seeds and quickly realized I was going to be spending to much if I continued to buy those types of products. It’s a joke how many things companies get away with, just because they can. If we don’t buy they don’t profit.

  25. I use potting soil to start seeds. I only use seed starting mix to cover seeds like celery (1/8 in planting depth) after I put the seeds on top of potting soil.
