Calusa Garden Club of Marco Island recently enjoyed a trip to the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Miami on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. Twenty-three garden club members enjoyed a day filled with exploration, learning, and camaraderie at one of South Florida’s premier botanical destinations.
Upon arrival, the group was warmly welcomed by their guide, who led an informative tram tour showcasing the garden’s lush tropical landscapes and remarkable plant species, including the unique zombie palm and the garden’s oldest tree, planted in 1939. Highlights of the visit included learning about Fairchild’s innovative collaboration with NASA to research sustainable edible plants for space missions, as well as the ambitious Million Balcony Project, which aims to transform Miami into a living jungle by greening balconies, rooftops, and patios throughout the city. The garden offers many programs for students, including in science, photography, floral arrangement, and growing butterfly host plants.

Members enjoyed a delicious box lunch at the Glasshouse Café, with scenic views into the Wings of Tropics Butterfly House—home to hundreds of vibrant, rare butterflies. The event concluded with group photographs to capture the memorable day before the club returned to Marco Island.
