I was given a “banana-looking” plant that looked just like this a few years ago in Oakland California, and could never find what the plant was called. I don’t have photos of it.

I was just hiking in Patagonia (on the W Trek in Chile) and came across this plant that looks exactly like what I saw in Oakland. What is this plant, can it grow in Oakland, and if not, are there any similar plants that can?

This is Embothrium coccineum. Possibly it can grow in the Pacific Northwest, which has similar habitats. I have never seen it outside of Chile, but you have maybe encountered some of their relatives: Grevillea, Hakea, Leucospermum, which look similar and are often cultivated in Mediterranean climates like California.
