BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. — The Butte County Local Food Network is enhancing its school garden initiatives to nurture future generations in our area.
According to the organization, these gardens provide students with hands-on experiences in growing fruits and vegetables, promoting nutrition, ecology, and local food systems.
“Our school gardens help students understand where food comes from while building confidence, responsibility, and teamwork,” said Shelley Miller from the organization.
The program offers support to schools by assisting with garden planning and providing educational resources. It partners with several local schools, including Chico Achieve Charter School and Ridgeview High School, to integrate garden-based education into their curricula.
Volunteers and local farmers play a key role in maintaining these gardens and fostering student learning. The initiative also aims to boost local food resilience by encouraging community engagement with locally grown produce.
The Butte County Local Food Network plans to expand the program to more schools and increase community partnerships in the future. Community members interested in volunteering or donating are encouraged to connect with the organization.
