It might look sleek and sculptural in a garden border, but bamboo has a habit of travelling where it’s not wanted — including straight under your fence.

While many invasive plants slow down in winter, bamboo remains active underground all year round. And according to invasive plant removal specialists Environment Controls, it’s increasingly bypassing garden fences and causing tension between neighbours.

Not all bamboo behaves the same

There are two main types of bamboo, and neither is truly non-invasive if left unmanaged.

Running bamboo is the most aggressive. It uses a network of underground rhizomes to travel long distances, often popping up several metres away.

Clumping bamboo tends to stay closer to where it’s planted, but can still exert significant pressure on paving and structures if allowed to spread.

A problem hiding beneath your fence

Unlike seasonal weeds, bamboo spreads through underground rhizomes that travel beneath soil and barriers. Growth above ground may slow in colder months, but beneath the surface it continues to move.

‘We have seen a significant increase in people coming to us with concerns over their Bamboo or a neighbour’s that they can see moving closer to their boundary. Bamboos will grow beneath barriers such as fences and hedges. It simply will not stop – until it is stopped!’ Jennifer Holmes at Environment Controls explains.

Left unchecked, it can emerge metres from the original plant, pushing through decking, patios and even underground piping once growth accelerates in spring.

When a garden issue becomes a legal one

Although bamboo is not currently listed under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it can still land homeowners in difficulty. Under UK common law, if a plant constitutes a nuisance — causing physical damage or interfering with a neighbour’s enjoyment of their property — the owner can be held liable for damages and removal costs.

Why winter is the best time to deal with bamboo

Winter may not feel like peak gardening season, but Jennifer says it’s actually the most effective time to deal with bamboo. Wet conditions soften the soil, making excavation easier, and addressing the problem now helps prevent more aggressive growth once temperatures rise in spring.

If you’re unsure whether bamboo is becoming a problem, there are a few early warning signs to look for:

• Lateral spread: new shoots breaking the surface away from the main plant.

• Stem shape: running bamboo often has a vertical groove, while clumping varieties are usually round.

• Pressure at the base: dense clumps pushing up paving slabs or hard landscaping.

‘Whilst a treatment plan is effective in controlling the bamboo, it takes longer so don’t expect an immediate result,’ warns Jennifer. She says the best option is to have it excavated, but reassures any concerned homeowners that their gardens don’t need to be ruined in the process, as small diggers can be used on residential properties with minimal disruption.
