Richard Barker, horticultural expert and commercial director of LBS Horticulture, recommends juniper – a versatile shrub or small tree best known for the berries used to flavour gin. With its untamed, rustic character and distinctive fragrance, it’s particularly well suited to gardens with a naturalistic, slightly wild feel.
‘Juniper can be planted between October and March as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged,’ Richard says. ‘They should be grown in moist, free-draining soil in full sun or partial shade, and once established, they do not need much maintenance.’
He advises checking the plant’s eventual height and spread before planting to ensure it’s the right fit for your space.
