A Q&A With Linneas Garden
High-energy punk rock through a queer femme lens…

What’s the title of your latest release, and what does it mean to you?
‘Stop Codon’ is like an off switch for your DNA. In the song, ‘Stop Codon’ is a metaphor for cutting off bad habits, toxic thought patterns, and exercising free will.

What was the hardest part about putting this release together, and why?
Nothing. We’re in a DIY punk rock band. Everything’s hard, it’s all part of the job, and we love it.

Who produced the release – what did they bring to it? If you produced it yourselves what do you enjoy most about producing your own material?
I really enjoyed working with Tom O’Donnell (producer) and Rob Norris (engineer) at Livingroom Studios in Ridgewood, NY for our upcoming EP Get Heard. We collaborated and brought the band’s ideas to life – pushing myself vocally from whispers to screams, recording through multiple guitars and amps, and capturing the power of our live sound.

What do you want the listener to take away from listening to your music?
You can do the good work, fight the good fight, and still have a kickass good time.

How does a track normally come together? Can you tell us something about the process?
I usually start out with lyrics, a melody, and basic structure. I bring it to the band, and we edit and work it out live.

What band/artists have influenced you the most since you started this project, and why?
My biggest musical inspirations are artists like David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith and Debbie Harry, who kept evolving while staying true to themselves. The non-musical influences behind ‘Stop Codon’ include a fascination with dystopian fiction like 1984 and Brave New World, sci-fi movies like The Matrix and Minority Report, queer glam rock films like Velvet Goldmine and Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and scientific advances like gene editing and brain plasticity.

A Q&A With Linneas Garden

What countries would you like to tour? Are there any standout venues you’d like to play in?
We’re excited to be making our SXSW debut, followed by a Southwest tour in promotion of ‘Stop Codon’.

If you could pick one track for our readers to listen to in order to get a taste of your music, what would you pick, and why?
‘Pathological Liar’, off our Mirrors EP. Every time we play it is cathartic. It’s an example of how art can take the worst and make it the best.

What ambitions do you have for the band/your career?
We’re evolved from livestreams to playing local Boston clubs to touring nationally, from simple chords and lyrical ideas to more complex riffs and finding ways to convey my unique perspective on a shared theme. The goal is and has always been elevation.

Finally, as you leave the stage, what are your parting words?
We are Linnea’s Garden. Fu*k the patriarchy!
