Retaining wall backfill

With excavation done, I'm planning out my retaining wall that will go around the patio. After the gravel base, the retaining wall will stand 20in above the patio surface. How much space behind the wall do I need for backfill?

This is clay heavy soil in Denver. I keep seeing 12in for backfill width but that seems overkill for a wall this small.
