First bloom on my Coelogyne propinqua, and what a show! 🧬 There is very little information online about this Philippine native (endemic to Leyte), so I’m thrilled to share this footage, captured using a macro lens for clarity.

The spikes develop rapidly, twisting into dangling chains reminiscent of DNA. The sparkling coral flowers are tiny (toothpick for scale!), but don’t let their size fool you. They are night-fragrant and incredibly pungent—the scent even escapes my orchid cabinet! It’s a unique, “boozy” aroma: think fermenting watermelon with hints of cucumber. 🍉🥂

    💚 Easy-grower

    🪴 Orchiata

💧 Water as soon as, or right before the media goes dry (0.0 EC✨tap water)

    💡 Full-spectrum LEDs (5-7 DLI 14/10)

    🌱 K-Lite Plus fertilizer

    👃 Fruity, Alcoholic

NOTE: The photo attached to this comment is of the fresh blooms, the video footage shows the blooms as they are beginning to wither. The flowers last about two weeks, and the fragrance seems to get stronger each evening until the flowers begin fading. The fragrance is highly unusual, and if I had to guess, the pollinators are probably fruit flies.

An additional note — the new leaves that come up with the inflorescence are a lovely olive green color, which makes for a striking contrast to the flowers and older green leaves.

    Acquired from RC Orchids.

It’s so pretty just sitting there 😍 Well done on this and be sure to take all the notes you can so you can be the one to provide the info about it! I love it!
