We’re starting our backyard garden from scratch here in California. After moving back home to SoCal from Ohio and beginning a new chapter as a family, it’s finally time to build our raised garden beds and start planting fruit trees and vegetables in our new backyard.

In this video, we:
• Build our raised garden beds
• Plan out our backyard garden
• Go shopping for plants and fruit trees
• Take the first steps toward creating our suburban backyard homestead

We’re not experts but we’re learning as we go and building something meaningful for our family. From homemaking and fatherhood to DIY projects and gardening in Southern California, we’re bringing you along for the entire journey.

If you’re interested in backyard gardening, raised bed gardening, starting a garden from scratch, or building a small backyard homestead in California, this series is for you.

  1. We’re officially starting over 🌱

New state. New backyard. New garden.

This space was completely empty… and now we’re building it from scratch for our family.

If you were designing your dream backyard garden, what’s the FIRST thing you’d plant?

    👇 Let us know below.

  2. You do not call individuals who are not full-size midgets, but it is appropriate to call them Dwarfs. It's good to see that you all are happy and glowing to be back home with family and friends.

  3. Please wear your safety glasses and gloves, I work in a manufacturing plant and I have seen so many accidents ,that could have been prevented if they would have been wearing their ppe. People have lost fingers, eyes sight because they did not want to wear the safety equipment. Please think of your children if you don't think of anyone else. 🙏🏽 🙏🏽 🙏🏽

  4. Wondering were those the fruit trees that you purchased? Also, what is a good price for a citrus tree? We are thinking about getting a lemon tree for our yard

  5. Watching from Indiana. I laughed when I saw the beautiful flowers….enjoy the weather 🩷

  6. Yaaas! Thanks for the shout out to your Ohio fans and extended family! We miss you, but we are happy for ya’ll! ❤

  7. You and your husband are such great role models for US! Thank you for sharing your expertise via YouTube.

  8. Started my seed starting haven’t posted it yet because I accidentally do a lot off camera BUT I’m excited so I crank it out. 😂 Excited for you all too! Here in Ga the weather went from freezing to 60’s. ❤ the gardener y’all are talking about is Bre Ellis 🍅 I felt so bad for her. She’s now moved to open land😊 so nobody’s herbicide drift will get her now. happy Gardening y’all 🎉

  9. Another Ohioian here wishing you all the best with your garden!! I’m just a tad bit jealous of the weather in California.

  10. I want to start my first garden this year and I want to plant cucumbers, peppers, and lettuce. Maybe you two should do those…I'm so excited to see how you re-start your garden in Cali. I'm learning so much from you!😊❤

  11. Michigan here 👋🏾 and it's definitely still Winter on February 14th, but it's NEVER too early to start prepping for gardening season. In early Spring I start my seedlings in the house with a grow light. I transplant them to my raised garden beds once there's no more threat of frost. Looking forward to seeing your garden progress.❤

  12. It’s not weird, they’re getting excited for what yall get excited for. Makes sense to me……. They know what’s coming, pretty stuff🤣

  13. I’m so jealous you’re able to garden now. We’re still under a foot of snow in NY and there’s more supposed to come this week. I’m living vicariously through your channel and other creators in the warmer states. 😊

  14. Won’t Home Depot deliver everything you need in one trip? Just like grocery delivery.

  15. Speaking of beetles, you can always get some Japanese beetles traps. They really work!
    Bag-a-beetle! Watching from Ohio! ☺️

  16. Loved the halftime show!! 🥰You guys never cease to amaze me. Man out there in the dark doing what you guys do and working with what you had to give you light.
    👏🏾👏🏾
Well I know this new creation for your California garden will be as always brilliant!! Can’t what to see what’s next!! ❤

  17. I love seeing the whole family getting involved in the garden prep! Those raised beds are going to be perfect for all your veggies, and that citrus collection is making me dream of fresh lemonade. 🍋

A little tip from someone who's filled plenty of raised beds: layer cardboard or newspaper at the bottom before adding your sticks and branches. It helps suppress weeds AND slowly breaks down to feed the soil. Just used this method myself—total game changer for saving on soil costs! 🌱✨

  18. Congrats on your garden process. 18:17 – "They ain't tryin' to get me. Not today devil." LMAO and 25:50 "We don't know know, but we know." Let's go Candace Owens- LOL

  19. I’m an Ohioan, was so excited to have you in OH. I only live here because my family is here so I understand moving back to family. Something about listening to you guys just communicating is calming. What a blessing to your children.

  20. I think I seen that video. It didn’t destroy the plants, she just didn’t want to keep them because she’s an organic gardener. I would have been pissed too
