So I obviously messed up cutting this tree … I believe I didn't make a big enough notch and I also cut into the hinge when I did the back cut… Any ideas?
You’re clearly over your head, just leave it or get a pro.

Get rid of your chainsaw
Gozermac
Rig a very long chain around the smaller middle piece and pull from very safe distance. Preferably the next county over.

This looks scary, but I’m not sure my nonexpert ideas are correct. From an untrained eye, can you guys explain how dangerous this is and why?

Is it hung up in another tree?
You did your back cut far too high there is no hinge. It’s all kinds of bad what you did

Looks like you tried to cut a leaner and didn’t use a bore cut on the release cut.
Leaners should be cut using a bore and cutting out the back of the tree, away from the apex of your notch.
Heavy leans are notorious for barberchairing, and this is a perfect example of why bore cutting and finishing opposite the apex of your notch is important.
Learn from this. Or leave it to professionals.
Not every tree should be felled using a conventional notch, the fact that you barber chaired this tree indicates to me you are very green in the arboriculture industry, or you’re a home owner working well outside the bounds of your skill set.
Unless you know what you’re doing, are well versed in notch types and situational use, you should not be doing this work. Felling trees has an associated best practice and process that should be followed routinely. Do some research before you get yourself killed.
Arboriculture is extremely dangerous. Do your due diligence, protect and educate yourself before you fell another. Leave nothing to chance when felling trees, those that do, rarely live to post on Reddit.

Hey OP, serious response here.
There is very little chance you can do anything safe with this tree. My advice is let it drop on it’s own.
As for getting better, find some smaller trees that need to be removed and start there.
There are tons of good cutting videos on YouTube. Watch and practice the techniques.
Remember that reading a tree lean is crucial to a success cut.

Looks like it barber chaired. There are lots of videos on why it happened and why it is extremely dangerous.

Explosives, and set them off remotely. Preferably from another country.
Or call a pro. This is tremendously dangerous, you lucked out that you’re still here. I wouldn’t try my luck again if I were you.

You tie a rope to it; second picture for reference, tie the rope where there’s that small white dot.
And pull. Likely to the left (from what I can see of the surrounding trees).
Make sure you’ve got a long, strong rope.
It should wrench and break.
Don’t try to fix this with any sort of chainsaw. At least not until it’s laying flat on the ground.
Seriously though…I’d caution tape off the area and just wait for the next good windstorm.
Or explosives/burning/stump remover from a distance (though the risk with those is that yo*u* fail to get the tree felled and make it even *more* unstable/dangerous)

You’re going to hurt and maybe even kill yourself or someone else. This type of cut was wrong for the tree. It needs a 10% bore cut for safety and control of the fell.

Throw rocks at it from a safe distance away
Walk away and let that shit fell itself lol
