A man was fatally struck Monday evening while crossing Jericho Turnpike in Garden City Park, according to the Nassau County Police Department.
He was later identified as a 56-year-old man, the department wrote in a news release, which didn’t disclose his name or hometown.
The crash happened at about 8:44 p.m. as he was crossing the turnpike north near Nassau Boulevard, and he was struck by a 59-year-old man driving north in a 2020 Honda SUV, the release said. The driver stayed at the crash scene.
The pedestrian “suffered severe trauma,” was brought to a hospital and pronounced dead, according to the release.
The release doesn’t say who is believed to be at fault, how the crash happened, the driver’s speed or other details.
In 2024, the most recent year for which statistics are available, 308 pedestrians in New York State were killed by drivers of motor vehicles, including 63 on Long Island: 26 in Nassau and 37 in Suffolk, according to tallies by the University at Albany-based Institute for Traffic Safety Management & Research.
Newsday has reported that Long Island roads are among the state’s deadliest to walk and bike on, but drivers involved in crashes that kill pedestrians and bicyclists rarely face criminal charges.
