Sunken Garden Society
21/10/2025 – Ciaran McCrickard / South and South East In Bloom 2025, RHS Wisley, Surrey.
As we look towards spring, the Sunken Gardeners are also reflecting on 2025, with well attended Gardening Days and two awards from the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society).
Towards the end of 2025 some of the team took a trip to RHS Wisley for the annual award ceremony and were delighted to repeat the success of 2024 with a RHS Britain in Bloom It’s Your Neighbourhood Level 5 Outstanding, whilst also adding a RHS Britain in Bloom Biodiversity Award Silver Gilt.

The January Gardening Day found the sun shining and the Sunken Gardeners bird watching with the help of some of Thanet RSPB’s members, guiding young and old alike with knowledge. One of the RSPB members gave a short introductory talk and as if to cue, a kestrel came and hovered overhead.
February will be a Seed Swap morning – whilst we always encourage visitors to join in with some gardening, which is suited to all levels, there’s always someone on hand to advise – we will hold our annual swap with seeds harvested from plants in the Garden at the end of the year, including sunflowers and calendula, also known as the bright and cheerful marigold. You’re invited to bring some seeds along and leave with a small part of the Sunken Garden, it’s a great way to spread the joy of gardening, growing for your own space, but also to cultivate some plants to bring back to the Garden later in the year for transplanting.

In March we invite you to take part in the RHS Grow With It campaign, encouraging all ages to have a go at sowing seeds and getting new growth underway.
Volunteering brings so many benefits, meeting new people, learning a new skill or making use of knowledge gained throughout life and passing it on; being outdoors for a couple of hours on the last Saturday of each month; forgetting phones and embracing the great outdoors.
Everyone is welcome, whatever your age or experience and we hope that you’ll come and join us at a Community Gardening Day.
The below are on the last Saturday of the month, 10am to 12noon

Hornby Hobbies and HatHats
A Kent-based charity, the HatHats Foundation, is launching a new phase of its Grounds for Growth initiative – a project focused on creating employment pathways in the coffee industry for young people in Uganda. Supporting the project is Dan Foulser, Development Manager at Corgi (part of the Hornby Hobbies group), who will be travelling to Kampala as part of the delivery team.
In July 2026, a 14-strong HatHats team will travel to Uganda to help build a dedicated Barista Academy within the local community. The academy will provide hands-on barista training, industry-standard education, access to equipment, and long-term mentoring – giving young people practical, job-ready skills in a fast-growing sector.
Dan will be helping with the build of the academy, running training workshops, setting up equipment and materials, and documenting the work to support fundraising and long-term awareness. He will also take part in ongoing community engagement with local partners on the ground.
The project builds on HatHats’ first visit to Uganda in 2023, where the team worked with local communities to establish foundations for long-term impact – including drilling boreholes to provide fresh water, funding coffee equipment for a social enterprise, and delivering hospitality training.
Closer to home, a series of fundraising events are taking place across Kent, beginning with a HatHats Charity Quiz Night:
Friday 27 February, 7pm–9pm
South Quay Shed, Whitstable
Tickets: £10 (with raffle prizes and food and drink available) – available directly from HatHats
All profits go directly to the Grounds for Growth project
Additional community fundraising activities are planned throughout spring and early summer.
As HatHats source their coffee directly from Uganda, the project is about giving back to the communities behind the supply chain – helping to build skills, resilience and opportunity, while connecting Kent communities with a global story of shared growth.

Martha Trust

Reclamet Holdings Limited, a leading vehicle and metal recycling business based in Thanet, has strengthened its partnership with local charity Martha Trust for 2026.
Martha Trust supports young people and adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities, providing lifetime care and vital support to both residents and their families. The charity operates two residential homes along the Deal–Sandwich Road.
Reclamet Owner and Managing Director, Stuart Mann, visited Martha Trust last year to meet residents and staff, and to see first-hand the impact of the charity’s work. During his visit, Stuart learned how heavily the organisation relies on support from local businesses and the wider community to maintain the high level of care and opportunities that the residents deserve.
In 2025, Reclamet became Main Sponsor of Martha Trust’s flagship fundraising event, Music on the Farm, held in the fields at Solley’s Ice Cream in Ripple. The company has now confirmed it will continue as Main Sponsor for the 2026 event, which will take place on Sunday 14 June.
During discussions with the charity, Stuart also learned that two of Martha Trust’s minibuses – which play a vital role in residents’ daily lives – were due to be replaced. With funding for replacement vehicles still being raised, Reclamet committed to keeping both minibuses serviced and roadworthy until the charity is able to purchase new vehicles.

Fundraising and Events Manager, Kerry Banks BEM, said: “Stuart’s extremely generous offer to keep our two oldest buses roadworthy has been an absolute godsend. Both vehicles have required a great deal of work to remain safe and in good condition, and we cannot thank him enough. His continued Main Sponsorship of Music on the Farm also means that more of the money raised on the day can go directly towards supporting our incredible residents at Martha Trust.”
Owner and Managing Director of Reclamet Holdings Limited, Stuart Mann, added: “The work carried out by everyone at Martha Trust, from care staff through to the fundraising team, is nothing short of inspirational. We’re incredibly proud to support such a vital local charity and to continue as headline sponsor of this fantastic community event.”
Tickets for Music on the Farm are on sale now and can be purchased at www.marthatrust.org.uk/MusicontheFarm
