Residents interested in sustainable landscaping, environmental stewardship, and wildlife-friendly gardening are invited to attend the annual Florida-Friendly Landscaping Seminar on Friday, March 21, at the Melbourne Auditorium.
BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — Residents interested in sustainable landscaping, environmental stewardship, and wildlife-friendly gardening are invited to attend the annual Florida-Friendly Landscaping Seminar on Friday, March 21, at the Melbourne Auditorium.
The free community event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with check-in beginning at 8:15 a.m., at the auditorium located at 625 E. Hibiscus Boulevard.
Hosted by the City of Melbourne in partnership with multiple environmental and community organizations, the seminar is designed to educate and empower residents on practices that conserve water, protect local ecosystems, and enhance home landscapes throughout Florida.
In addition to informational vendor exhibits, the program will feature four expert-led presentations on environmental health, home gardening, and wildlife conservation.

The presentation schedule includes:
9:30–10:15 a.m. — “Healing the Lagoon: Progress and Partnership at Work” by Kathy Hill of the Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program, highlighting restoration efforts and regional collaboration to protect the Indian River Lagoon.
10:15–11:00 a.m. — “Grow Delicious Food – No Matter Where You Live” by Sally Scalera of the UF/IFAS Extension Brevard County, offering practical tips for successful food gardening in a variety of living spaces.
11:30 a.m.–12:15 p.m. — “What You Plant Matters” by Tim and Anna Harrison of Native Butterfly Flowers, focusing on the ecological importance of plant selection.
12:30–1:15 p.m. — “Bats & Their Benefits” by Ariel Horner, M.S., of the Florida Bat Conservancy, exploring the role bats play in healthy ecosystems.
Door prizes will be awarded twice during the event to winning ticket holders. Attendees who complete event surveys will also receive complimentary goodie bags containing hose nozzles, gardening gloves and seeds.

The seminar will also include complimentary pastries, fruit, and coffee. City Bistro will be on-site, selling breakfast sandwiches and lunch options, including sandwiches, salads, soups, snacks, and beverages.
Attendees are encouraged to bring reusable water bottles; water refill stations with large jugs will be available. All food waste from the event will be composted by Eaton Worms, reinforcing the seminar’s sustainability focus.
The event is planned and organized by the City of Melbourne, Brevard County Solid Waste, Lagoon Life, the University of Florida/IFAS Brevard Extension, and the Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program/Indian River Lagoon Council. Organizers also extended special thanks to event sponsor WM for its support.
The Florida-Friendly Landscaping Seminar is open to the public and offers residents an opportunity to learn practical, environmentally responsible landscaping techniques while connecting with local experts and organizations committed to protecting Florida’s natural resources.
