Blackcurrants are famous for the exceptional amount of Vitamin C they contain – apparently four times more than oranges!

If you’re a fan of these small, juicy summer fruits, then maybe you already have a few currant bushes in your garden, but you would love to have a few more.

Well, now is the time. “Currants, which have black, red and white fruits, are related to gooseberries and are another great shrub to take cuttings from at this time of the year,” says Guy.

He advises cutting a couple of healthy stems from the bush, which can then be cut again into 20-25cm long sections. “Make sure there are several buds on it, including one at the top and one at the bottom.

Dig a narrow 10cm trench in a sheltered part of the garden that gets the sun and insert the cuttings, 10cm apart, making sure several buds are below the surface. Then firm them into place to stop any movement. It couldn’t be easier,” says Guy, “And just think, in two or three years, you’ll have more than enough fruit to start making jams, jellies and ice-cream.”
