Could just be the plant hardening off (corking) at the base as it grows.
Omg the puffy prickle parts made me think this was some sort of crochet project at first!!! You could probably crochet a cactus using the bean stitch… that’d be cute lol!! Your dude looks fine to me, just get him back in the dirt 🤣
