Griffin Primary School in Wandsworth won the London Borough of Culture Schools Garden Competition, held to encourage schools to reimagine outdoor spaces.

The school’s winning design, Griffin Green, impressed judges with its focus on sustainability, biodiversity and education, with creative use of recycled and upcycled materials.

Jack Taylor, headteacher at Griffin Primary School, said: “At Griffin Primary School, our community faces significant social and economic challenges, with 68% of pupils eligible for Free School Meals and almost all living in areas of income deprivation.

“Despite these barriers, our children and families demonstrate remarkable spirit, resilience and determination. Winning the London Borough of Culture Schools Garden Competition is a tremendous opportunity for our school.”

An assembly was held at Griffin Primary School in December, educating students on where food comes from and how it can be grown.

It was delivered by Enable, a not-for-profit organisation working in partnership with Wandsworth Borough Council to deliver health, leisure and community services and events that enrich people’s lives.

The session was designed to spark interest ahead of the garden’s development, and ensure students are involved from the very beginning of the project.

Mr Taylor added: “The Griffin Green Garden will create an inclusive, sustainable space that supports wellbeing, nurtures biodiversity and brings learning to life across the curriculum. For many of our pupils, who have limited access to green space, this will provide hands-on experiences in science, food growing and environmental stewardship.

“The garden will be a true ‘living classroom’ and a symbol of our community’s determination to grow, learn and thrive together.”

The competition, delivered in partnership with Enable and Wandsworth Council, is part of ‘Welcome to Wandsworth’, the London Borough of Culture 2025 programme.
