Got given this plant from a family friend who sadly passed away. I have no idea on what it is, and what sunlight/watering it needs.
I’m thinking about giving the plant fresh soil as the current soil is very sodden and dense and there is root showing (i think it was overwatered before i was given it)- is this a good idea or shall i leave it be? worried the soil is going to get rotten as it’s so sodden. Thanks!

fresh soil is always good. it’s an aroid so give it a very loose chunky mix, water when the top inch of two feels dry
