It is thought to be an escaped pet

A Warwickshire family has shared their ‘sssurprise’ after discovering a snake in their garden. The incident happened on Saturday (7 February) when Matt Turner was pottering around the shed bar of his Leamington home.

He’d grabbed a cloth from a shelf without looking one moment, then when he glanced back a few seconds later he spotted a snake curled around some bottles.

Not a fan of snakes, and still in shock at the encounter, he called his wife and son to come and see what he’d discovered. They then shared images on a social media page asking for advice, leading to a local resident with experience with reptiles to come and take him off their hands.

“It was a very scary experience,” Matt laughed, “It is not something you expect to go and find.”

Explaining the encounter, he continued: “I went out to the bar I’ve made to have a bit of a clear up. I never noticed it to start with but I realised after that I actually grabbed inside the shelf it was on to get a cloth. When I eventually saw it – I’m not great with snakes so I went inside to grab my wife Michelle and (son) Mason to come and see it.

“Michelle then put a post online to see if anyone could help as we had no idea what to do with it . A guy called Mark Henderson came round and took him out in a tub with a towel.”

Having come to the rescue of both the snake and Matt and his family, Mark told CoventryLive: “It was just a friendly little corn snake, I just wanted to get it out of the cold as soon as possible before it perished. I knew he wasn’t dangerous so a little bit of care and comfort and he’ll be fine.”

The running theory is the snake is an escaped bet and plans are now in motion to try and find its owner and get it home.

“I’d say he’s an escaped pet,” Mark added. “He looks too well fed to be wild and the climate outside is too cold for him to survive. It is possible but rare. I’m currently waiting to hear from the reptile centre but failing that I’ll take him to the RSPCA where he can be looked after properly until the owner is found.”
