Spring is on the way and there’s no better time to start preparing your garden for summer. Experts have shared the gardening jobs you won’t want to miss out on before the end of the month.
By making a start now, you can ensure your garden is in perfect shape by the time the days are brighter and you want to spend more time outdoors. If you’re hoping to have an array of flowers in your garden this year, BBC Gardener’s World has shared one that you’ll need to plant now.
It says you should sow sweet peas in deep pots and keep them frost-free in a greenhouse or on a sunny windowsill.
February is the best month for planting sweet peas. There’s an ideal balance of daylight and cooler temperatures meaning you’ll have the best conditions for the flower to grow.
You can expect flowers from late June to early July if you plant them now.
Garden and Allotment says: “Sweet peas are cool-season flowers that thrive when started early, making February the perfect month to sow seeds or plant seedlings.
“Early planting ensures robust root systems and healthy growth, allowing the plants to bloom profusely in late spring and summer.
“With their wide range of colors and captivating scent, sweet peas are a must-have for any flower enthusiast.”
You can grow sweet peas either in pots or in garden beds; they are a timeless addition to any garden.
When planting, make sure to plant sweet peas in an open, sunny position in a well-drained but moisture-retentive soil.
It’s important to make sure you use a good, peat-free compost with a slow-release fertiliser mixed in.
By getting started now, in just a few months time, you’ll have a stunning array of colourful scented blooms in your garden.
