GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Grassroots In The Garden kicked off its second year of community workshops on Thursday night.

The workshops are free to attend and open to anyone interested in learning how planting ground cover seeds now can help them germinate come spring.

Seeds planted during the workshop will be turned into mulch to help suppress weeds, conserve water, and attract pollinators.

That mulch will then be spread at the Seymour Park Food Forest, a project aimed at alleviating food insecurity and food deserts within the city of Green Bay.

“Most people have only ever bought things from the store,” says Dillon Weist with Northeast Wisconsin Technical College’s Bounty Garden. “Whereas it’s not actually that hard with a little bit of knowledge, a little bit of learning, and a little bit of practice to grow things on your porch and to go to a local community garden.”

The second workshop has been scheduled for February 21st.
