GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – Desert Bloom Gardening and Hydroponics has grown into something new since Nikki Tyler and her husband, Isaiah, took ownership of the Grand Junction business in 2022, which originally opened in 2009.
The couple transformed the hydroponics store with a mission of creating an inclusive environment for all levels of gardeners.
“A big mission of ours is to help people grow, grow their own food and medicine, but also grow real food. We want it to be appealing to all types of gardeners,” Tyler said.
The business provides ingredients for growing organic, nutrient-dense food while serving as a space to hold educational courses on plant growth, management, and more.
“Our classes are one that we feel really proud about offering to the community,” said Tyler. ”Some are paid, majority are free, but that’s always a great way for us to stay connected.”
Fostering this connection with their customers has had a big impact on Tyler.
“It means the world to us to be able to help people have access to organic growing supplies, trusted growing supplies that are going to go into the soil, that are going to go into their bodies,” she said. “We don’t take that task lightly, right, because we’re helping to enrich our community members through the first and foremost thing, which is food.”
As a Black-owned business on the Western Slope, cultivating these personal relationships means that much more.
“We aren’t any different from anyone else, but it’s great to be able to shine bright in a community of where we are the minority. It’s great to connect with others and allow them to see what we’re building and to invite them to be a part of what we offer,” Tyler said.
The pair is heading into the new year with a vision, to be a space where community members can find connection through more than just gardening. They are upgrading their recently launched Bloom Room, which will host their classes and community events such as comedy shows, speed dating events, or open mic’s.
Desert Bloom will host a “Hip Hop Open Mic & Cypher” on Friday, February 6. The event starts at 7:30 p.m., and doors open at 7:00 p.m.
“We’re calling all of our local community members who are hip-hop MCs. It’s their time to shine and showcase their original songs,” Tyler said.
