My Ginseng has refused to grow leaves on its branches for a year. It’s not dead because it keeps sprouting these smaller branches, but everything on top is dead. How do I prune this? Where do I cut from? Or is it a lost cause? It gets water every few days and adequate sunlight.

Ginseng bonsaïs are usually made of two parts grafted together. One specie for roots and trunk, another for the branches and leaves. If the upper part is dead (have you check scratching with your nail if there is green), there will be nothing growing from this part. The bottom part will give you bigger leaves. If you want a ficus tree, let a branch grow then cut it and prop. If what you want is a bonsaï, you need a new plant.
Hello, I love chopping ficuses. If the top is dead, you shiuld cut of all thin old parts and to let him rejuvenate himself by sprouting new branches wherever he wants.
1.If you are not sure, and you see that thin old parts also sptouts, try to cut them a little bit first (red lines) than, if dead cut all branches that are brown, those who are live let alone..maybe just need some time to rest. Do not water that much.
2.After all, if thin old branches are weak and slow you can cut them all off (green lines).
3.For sure, you should shorten new sprouts on one or two nodes (blue lines). Hope this helps. Good luck 🍀
