I’m still in the exploratory stage of this obsession, and I love it all. I hope the learning stage never ends.
Last spring the sun started to make me sick, and I’ve always been a big outdoors/foraging/gardening person. So, this wasn’t an easy change for me… but then I learned I could make little versions of the outside, but inside, with controlled UV directed at the outside bits while I remain mostly unscathed.
This new fascination has helped me immensely in dealing with my burgeoning illness, and I am forever grateful to be able to bring the wild indoors.
I hope you can glean some of the joy I’ve found in these green growing jars of dirt.

All created between 10/25 and 1/26, too many plants to list but ask me for specifics, some window but mostly cheap full spectrum LED lights, initial watering with 45 ppm tds water and/or distilled (I also have carnivores so it’s around) and only the wardian case insists on added moisture post initial planting. I burp the fern enclosures but they have a good moisture gradient going.
Substrate; bonsai coarse pumice, perlite and sphagnum moss mixed, organic succulent cactus mix with some blood worm casings mixed in.
I’ve been experimenting on amount of sphagnum vs how much worm poop.
Also, watching and not freaking out about mold and decay. Mold happens, that’s part of the experiment.
Same with decay, that’s part of a living system. Gotta make room somehow.
I noticed some jewel orchids in there. Any tips on how to integrate them into a terrarium? I’ve had one for a while that has gotten quite leggy. Considering cutting it up and putting it into a terrarium.
What is “45 ppm tds water”?
I’m a breaker of apothecary jars but I love them, yours are lovely
