A gardening guru has revealed there’s one crucial task green-fingered folk must tackle right now to guarantee a fruitful growing season.
Though January is drawing to a close and February’s bitter weeks still await, spring will soon arrive and nature will start to thrive once more.
With this in mind, horticultural experts across the nation are sharing their finest advice on how people can optimally prepare their plots for the seasonal shift.
One gardener, Ciar Byrne, has advised that people must begin getting their beds ready for seeds, ensuring they’re in prime condition for the extended daylight hours and briefer nights heading Britain’s way.
Writing in the Mail, she advised: “The days are getting longer and within a few weeks it will be time to start sowing seeds directly into the ground and transplanting seedlings that started off under cover into vegetable beds outdoors. Prepare your beds for the growing season now by clearing them of weeds using a hoe or hand fork.

“Next month, you can start sowing directly into the ground, making seed drills or planting out early potatoes and seedlings you have raised indoors.
“Doing the groundwork now will give you a head start for a productive growing season.”
Ciar isn’t the sole person urging gardeners on what they ought to be concentrating on in the forthcoming weeks, with Gardeners’ World favourite Monty Don also chiming in to recommend four tasks people should complete to help their gardens flourish.
Speaking enthusiastically about the month ahead, Monty urged gardeners to start planning their pruning, sowing, mulching, and bird feeding routines.
Regarding the fourth task, Monty emphasised the importance of supporting the local ecosystem, explaining that our feathered friends struggle during Britain’s harsh winters when food becomes scarce.

By providing regular meals, gardeners across the country can give birds a vital boost during their breeding season. Monty said: “Keep on feeding birds as they are now beginning to mate, nest and lay their first clutches of eggs. The better nourished the parent birds are, especially in cold weather, the larger and healthier the offspring will be.”
On the subject of mulching – the practice of blanketing the ground surrounding plants with compost or similar organic matter – Monty advised in his blog: “This will do three important jobs simultaneously.
“The first is to suppress any annual weeds and weaken any perennial ones. The second is to reduce evaporation and therefore keep in moisture and the third is that it will be incorporated into the soil by worms and improve the structure and nutrition.”
