Is my poplar pooched? I noticed this today and it starts from the ground and goes up about 20 feet. We’ve had some cold snaps lately hitting -35c (-31f) in Saskatchewan that feel like -45c (-49f). This is the south side of the tree so the sun hits it all day. Is this from the extreme cold and the “warm” sun shining on it? And is the tree doomed now? It was the only poplar growing in this tree line that was a perfect tree too which makes it even worse, all the other ones are kind of haggard with multiple co dominant leaders etc. Please let me know what you think! Thanks in advance

I’m sorry I can’t be of any help but just had to say your shadow in the first pic had me dying 😂

This wound will act as an entry point for bugs, pathogens, and decay. It’s not necessarily immediately doomed though. Trees are capable of compartmentalizing decay and may continue living for decades longer. It’s definitely not GOOD for the tree but I’ve seen living tulip poplars that are fully hollow. Keep an eye on it for any changes. If it is in an area where it could potentially strike something if it were to fall, I would consider having an arborist come out to inspect.
