Today I’m sharing two brand-new areas on our property that we’re developing into future gardens. What was once overgrown with underbrush, leaning trees, poison ivy, and invasive vines has been completely cleared — revealing beautiful new planting space just waiting to be transformed.

You’ll also see how I prune hellebores during their bloom season. Late winter is the perfect time to clean up hellebores so their flowers can truly shine, and I walk you step-by-step through exactly how and when to prune them.

If you’re dreaming about expanding your garden, reclaiming overgrown areas, or wondering how to care for hellebores in late winter, this video is for you.

  1. I started adding hellebores to my garden after watching you. They are a bright spot when everything else is still dormant.

  2. Japanese maples and other colored shrubs to go with your green and blue evergreen trees you are planning on adding.

  3. Can you tell me where I can get a Jackson? I have a lot of ivy and privet to get rid of. 😄 I leave any of the still good looking hellebore leaves to have a wider spread covering the ground. The first couple years here I didn't cut any and it all went brown to the ground soon enough! Love hellebores.
Will be interesting to see what you can plant under those walnut trees.

  4. Bless Jackson, I am highly allergic to Poison Ivy and poison oak. It’s always a trip to the Doctor for a shot and meds. My husband has spent years trying to get rid of it on our property, but it’s relentless! This will be a wonderful space for gardening, stay warm ..we Carolina people don’t do cold or ice 🥶❤

  5. It's so satisfying to get things cleaned up. Every 3 years we clean our our creek bed (nothing like the size of yours) so the water can flow unimpeded during large rainfalls. Like you we are infested with poison ivy. We cut and apply the painted on stump killer but we get new. Birds absolutely love eating the pods on the P. ivy you fill in the rest.🤣🤣 What a good son you have.

  6. I used 30 percent vinegar for my Ivy though ours here in Minnesota is a ground cover, it killed the poison ivy and thistle. Just a thought.

  7. Isn’t it just so much fun to dream? This is certainly the right time of year to do that. I look forward, as one of your viewers, to watch all these undeveloped areas of your property becoming beautiful garden areas!

  8. Can you plant Norfork Pine or Star Pine any of the beautiful wide evergreen trees. Trees that are the perfect back drop for a Christmas Card — No matter how big the family. I wishing I had enough space to have one of these fabulous trees?

  9. I sure y know so much more than I will ever know but I was surprised at the number of trees that were scraped and limbs broken off in the area Jackson cleared. You say he is very good. I think you are the ones who would know but is possible to leave the trees you feel are worth saving intact. Excuse me I do not know much about this. Hope you ae open to asking this question. Jackson has done a lot of work that most 16-year-olds would not have the aptitude to do.

  10. Greetings everyone. I so enjoy watching your projects. I'm in the mountains of Pennsylvania. It's expected 38 inches of snow at our mountain home. It's cold 20 degrees.

  11. I sure hope you come through the storm alright. I'm in Northern Illinois and our high today is 0 degrees. It's -6 right now 11:20 AM. We are supposed to get a few inches of snow and the super cold, but not ice. Ice is the worst of all weather in my opinion. It does so much damage to everything. I will be sending you prayers that you come through this all ok. The only thing we have to worry about is the furnace which is pretty new and the pipes freezing. We put heating on the pipes to prevent that so we have our fingers crossed! Love the Lenten Roses! They are so beautiful. Thank you for showing us how to care for them. I have been cutting off those bigger leaves, but only b/c I didn't like the look of them. I didn't realize they were supposed to be pruned off!! So thanks for that!! Take Good Care!! OOO

  12. Jenny I love how you are planting to complement the area, that is how I plant around my house, I think the space will tell you what type plants to put there. I agree with your Dad about that tree. I am enjoying watching all your new gardens and construction you all are doing. Thanks for sharing with us.

  13. That is a super attachment to make the soil look perfect. The helabores look great. Can’t wait to see how much the poison ivy comes back…if at all. It loves me a lot. Take care and keep warm. Praying we don’t have too much ice. 👍🙏😁🤞⭐️❤️👏🐾

  14. Can’t wait to see the end result! Clearing the area must be challenging with all the vines and wanting to keep the healthy trees in tact! I don’t deal with poison ivy, does it pose a risk if Brenna touches it too?

  15. My heart goes out….this type of storm is ment to stay up here in Wyoming…. Not come south! I pray for y'all and the plants and animals that are not ready for this! Actually it is meant to stayi in Canada where it is normal winter. i hope y'all have Salamander heaters in your greenhouse with lots of fuel…..and you can park johnny in garage or near door so you can drive on ice not walk….to check on greenhouses and plants…..praying everything thrives thru this storm!!!!! Good feeling remembering the Giant Green tank buried…..and your generator. Lots of prayers are with you!!

  16. I hope you stay safe this weekend. Ice is the worst. I'd rather have our cold and snow. -22F tonight in Canada. Looking forward to hearing more about your exciting new garden.

  17. Praying for everyone in this huge stroms path. Please God no ice, no electricity outages. I live in NE oklahoma. We sure could use some Prayers. Jenny this looks grear. Thank God for Jackson.❤

  18. Great video. Have you thought about putting in lots of tea olives in the new bed? Love the hellebores.

  19. So excited about the new beds. Thanks for covering the pruning of Linton Roses. To kill poison ivy in our yard I used extra strength vinegar and it worked like magic.

  20. Jenny, where can I find the old fashioned hellebores? I have lots of room and they are one of my favorites. Actually my first one was planted under a tree, a storm took the tree out and not it is in full hot sun and still does beautifully!

  21. I fear that leaning cedar’s time may arrive when the storm passes through. With the ivy growing up the trees I’ve found that it’s easier to cut about a foot of it off at the bottom and wait for it to die on the tree because when it’s dead it’s easier to pull it off the tree. Once it’s cut you can apply the herbicide to the root section of the ivy.

We have a Monrovia Cascade Blush hellebore near our front door that needs a couple of friends. We’re planning to be at the Open Garden in February so perhaps we’ll chat with you or your staff about which ones to add for variety.

Regarding the screening hedge that you plan to install I hope you’ll follow the advice of your buddy, Jim Putnam, and use a variety of plants so if one type has issues it will be easier to fill in a gap than to replace an entire hedge. Something like a combination of Giant Thuja, magnolia, and Carolina Midnight loropetalum would provide a variety of height and color. Regardless, we’re looking forward to seeing how that area develops.

  22. Been thinking about Y’all today, yesterday and I will be tomorrow too. Stay safe through this storm. You are in the prayers of all of us who follow you and have for some time. We are in the path as well up in New Hampshire. 🙏🙏🤗

  23. You can tell your son loves doing that job 🙂 we had Ivy it took us years to get rid of it. Good luck 🙂 stay safe stay warm and God bless.:)

  24. Good point about waiting to make sure things don't grow back. Wish I had a son who takes care of brush removal! Good for you! 🤗

  25. Louisiana here – why, of why, can’t this ice storm take out the poison ivy? LOL!! We have been battling it in one area for quite a while. I’m highly allergic, so by “we” I mean my hubby. The rest of the yard is mine – he gets the PI battlefield. Stay safe and warm! Icy roads are scary. This is good gumbo weather (if you brought some home with you from New Orleans)!

  26. Thanx for the Lenten rose lesson…best of luck in the storm. Looking to I ly get 4” or so here in NW Indiana. Cold…yes….but no ice. I’ll take it.

  27. Best wishes with the threat of bad weather in the coming days.
I know you guys know how to batton down the hatches. Stay safe and warm.

  28. Oh boy! How about forsythia and quince? Ornamental grasses are always pretty. All the plants you mentioned sound great. How nice to have a 15 year old that has a desire to clean an area.😊❤❤❤❤❤🐾❤️

  29. Jenny, what can of care do you give cast iron plants? I do nothing, except cut yellow/brown leaves. They’re tough! I guess I could give them a sprinkle of fertilizer 😊❤
