In April 2023 a garden bed by the side fence was created and extended to provide privacy from new construction next door.
Three 12-15 foot ball and burlap Thuja ‘Green Giants’ were installed by a landscape company and cost $$$$ in August 2023. In April 2023, I had also planted 5 container grown Cryptomeria ‘Radicans’ around 4-5 feet tall, but cost $, a quarter of the price of the installed Green Giants. Less than 3 years later the Radicans are nearly the same size as the Green Giants and we have more privacy.
Cryptomeria japonica ‘Radicans’, or Radicans Japanese Cedar, is an evergreen conifer with feathery blue-green foliage, a great choice for privacy screens and hedges. It’s very fast growing (up to 3-4 ft/yr), adaptable to various soils and drought tolerant once established.
Zones 5-8
Full sun to part shade
Can grow 30 to 40 ft tall depending on location.
In my area, northern Virginia, it is expected to grow around 30 ft.
I had also had installed a ball and burlap northern spruce at the end of the bed which was seen but not mentioned in the video. It was planted in August 2023 along with the Green Giants, and has grown nearly as tall as the Radicans.

Hey! Yes a privacy hedge can really make a difference in how you enjoy your garden and views. We lived on a 1/4 acre lot before and adding green privacy walls made it possible to feel enclosed in our own little world… filled with gardens. Your garden is gorgeous and really packed in the way we did in our Coastal Cottage Garden before we moved to our Country Garden.
