Our midsummer garden was looking a little too lush, so today we’re reclaiming space and revealing some buried treasures! From overgrown buttonbushes to perennials that need a reset, we’re pruning, cutting back, and even replacing a few underperforming annuals (we’re looking at you, fiber optic grass).

In this video, we’ll show you how we:
Shape shrubs like Sugar Shack Buttonbush and Oakleaf Hydrangeas 🌳
Refresh perennials like Bee Balm, Boom Chocolatta, and Sedum
Deal with summer pests (yes, slugs and snails showed up!) 🐌
Replace flops with Proven Selections Lavender Lace Cuphea 🌸
We also share why we plant thickly, what we do when that backfires, and how little edits can make a big impact. Plus, we found hidden boxwoods, a buried rose, and even a Let’s Dance Sky View hydrangea gasping for light.

  1. Thanks guys, for reminding me to get out there and cut more things back after flowering. Too often I keep walking by tired, spent blooms and wonder why I’m “underwhelmed” by my gardens! It is funny to watch the 2 of you “rediscover” your small shrubs that got swallowed up by the growth! 😂

  2. It's Electric Boogie Woogie Woogie LOL I said the same thing ! You guys are so relaxing and fun to watch. After the long days at the hospital sitting in the room with my mom you are my first choice to watch to help decompress when I get home . . Don't know if you know how much that helps. <3 thank you both

  3. Dear gentlemen, _Congratulations on this wonderful tutorial! I enjoyed seeing the care part of gardening more than just the buy and plant videos. It's also fun to see the interplanting progress. This was very helpful. Congratulations on what has become an aesthetic treat.

  4. Question! What do you buy for the black cages around some of your plants? I love them and think they blend in great and look sturdy. Ive tried regular chicken wire and it’s fine but the color not great and it bends easily/is very flexible which is great for some uses but something that is flexible but holds its structure/form is what I’m more so going for.

  5. I love you guys. You make me laugh and the chores I usually dread, don't seem so bad after watching your videos. I'm just wondering, could you trim the button bush back hard in late winter/early spring since it blooms on new wood?

  6. I’m in the Pacific Northwest, but it looks like we can grow many similar plants. You have a gorgeous garden. Do you have any deer pressure?

  7. What’s fun about these guys is that they are BOTH into gardening in the same way; which is a really unusual dynamic. like with Garden Answrer Aaron is more into lawn and trees … and with lots of channels only one partner is into gardening. also they share well and one doesn’t boss the other so both get to be creative with the landscape. throughly enjoying this newly found channel.

  8. I have a button bush that grew huge! I hated the shapeless blob look of it. So I up-limbed to make it look like a small tree and now I love it! It looks like a quirky little thing out of Dr. Seuss. And I under planted with hellebores and shade loving grasses.

  9. Perhaps that bush will need to be relocated now that everything is maturing. Then it can do it's natural thing without the need for continual pruning. The area looks so much better with it pruned.

  10. May I ask why you didn't just move the entire plant so it is happy and your other plants can fill in that space? You trimmed out so much of the plant?
    Happy Planting 🎉

  11. I love maintenance videos. This is my favorite part of gardening! You cut back the sedum all the way back? I used to think I only want what Laura has… but since I've come to discover your channel, I only want what Christopher and Eric have! This week, I cut back my Indiglo Girl salvia. It was done blooming. I hope to get a second vibrant bloom. Your garden is looking awesome. A great week to the both of you!

  12. Thank you for showing us some of the work it requires to actually create such a beautiful landscape. Until now I had only seen the videos that are your tours of the garden while you rate your plants. Your garden is so pretty it makes mine seem rather dismal in comparison.

  13. “You’re not very wet….you can’t tell….” Hahahahahaha. Great video, love clean-up projects…always something you don’t think you should cut/do/remove…and looks so much better when you do!
