HASLETT, Mich. (WILX) -People in Haslett had the chance to become gardeners with the winter seed sowing event on Sunday.
The event took place at the Haslett Community Church. Those who attended the event could learn how to grow plants during the winter months.
For the winter sowing workshop, around 70 people made recycled greenhouses by using milk jugs. This event was hands-on and free to the public.
Abby Deneau, with the event, spoke on the importance of growing native Michigan plants.
“The importance of this event is to educate people about native plants of Michigan and their role in our ecosystem and why they’re so important for wildlife and insects, which are in decline,” said Deneau, owner of Wild Ecoscapes LLC and Ecological Services Company.
Over winter, the seeds of the Michigan native plants will go through the cold stratification process so they can germinate in the spring. The group hopes to make this an annual event.
