Just got this from my sister and I’ve never grown a plant in water long term. How often should I change the water? Also do I add anything to it?

I’ve never grown a plant in water long term. When I’m propagating in water, I change it every few days. At least weekly.

You should add some liquid fertilizer every time you change water, you can change it any time between a week and a month, honestly you decide, some might grow algae faster so you would need to change mire often

About the liquid fertilizer, go based in the bottle, if it says like 10 ml for 1.5L id do like maybe 5-6 ml for 1.5 for water only plants, also check how much water it needs to fill it, and well yeah uhm…ok bye

It’s gorgeous. I hope he lives a long happy life. I would use distilled water to minimize hard water lines. Then add liquid fertilizer

I’ve only ever grown plant in water for a few months at most, and I only topped off the water! The only time I ever totally replace the water is when it looks kinda gross. If I were you I’d fertilize it every other refill, or every refill maybe. If it starts growing a lot of algae add a tiny amount of hydrogen peroxide. You can also do that proactively before any has grown to prevent it! I don’t think algae harms the roots very much luckily as long as it’s not crazy overgrown

with that many roots i would transfer that puppy to semi hydro. i love using pon. there’s slow release fertilizer and i feel the pon helps create stronger roots.

Well, in my case, I changed the water when I realized I was harboring a mosquito factory 😳

Seriously could not figure out how all these mosquitoes were “getting into my house” we were being eaten alive.

Happened to pour in a little more water to top it off, like the other posters are recommending, and saw the larva wiggling in the water

    I was so SO horrified

If it’s happy just keep adding water as it evaporates.

When you feel it is needed. Some will say never and some weekly. Watch your plant and make the decision. It’s water, not bleach. Try not to overthink.

  10. As soon as it starts getting mossy. That’s when I change mine.

Hi! I keep about half of my houseplants hydroponic and my advice is just refill and add a drop or two of liquid fertilizer here and there. If you notice there’s lots of algae, rinse it as best you can (it doesn’t look like those roots will come out at this point, but if so it’s perfectly fine to rinse them directly in the sink) and refill with distilled water, or filtered if distilled isn’t available. I’m open for any questions on hydroponics. I keep all sorts including succulents 🙂

If you don’t want to accidentally breed mosquitoes or algae, it’s best to dump the water every other week. The plant won’t die if you refresh the water less often, but it will look nicer and smell better if not left stale for more than 2 weeks or so.

You can grow a plant in water forever, if you add nutrients. While any soluble complete fertilizer regimen would work, to keep it cheap and easy, I recommend the using the fertilizer meant for countertop hydroponic systems (search AeroGarden fertilizer, as that’s the big name brand, though there are several “off brands” that are the same but cheaper). The stuff for countertop hydroponic is 100% complete with all macros and micros, already balanced, and at a concentration meant for dilution in small water volumes, so calculating dosage won’t require an advanced math degree.

I have several plants that have been in water culture for 4 or 5 years, and this is what I use. A teaspoon is enough for a big vase, so even the small bottles last a while.

I heard you’re supposed to change it everyday but that’s too much

I’ve never changed the water in these. I just top it off once a week or so. That adds oxygen to the water btw. As far as fertilizer goes, you can use what is suggested for the plant at a very diluted strength.

The ball is super cute but this bad boy seems good for the dirt now

I don’t think you need to change it. Just add to it when it get an inch or so below the usual water level!

I changed out the water in mine weekly. Change the water for plants in a bowl about once a week, or sooner if it looks cloudy, smells bad, or has algae, to keep roots oxygenated and prevent rot, though some people do it every 2-4 weeks for established plants with infrequent watering, adding a weak fertilizer monthly.

It really depends, sometimes you get some bio film or algae growth, good idea to change water more often, if it looks clear and happy then less often. Sometimes it reaches a nice state of equilibrium
