I’m growing this Giant Sequoia from seed and I really like the way it’s small branches look, which got me wondering if a tree like this that is known for growing massively tall can instead be made into a bonsai? I think it’d be pretty unique and its small needles make me think it’d be possible. Thoughts?
Now, it is less than a year old, maybe around 9 months?

Disagree with the masses here. They can be a challenging species to work with but they can absolutely be used as bonsai candidates.
I’m convinced that anything can bonsai’d. I love how huge this baby sequoia looks, like a puppy dog with huge paws. I’d say give it a shot and see what happens.
Environment Scientist, Horticulturalist, and Arborist in training here! The naysayers and haters are TOTALLY WRONG.
Any tree can be bonsai’ed, but the level of difficulty and attention changes drastically across species. A redwood will grow taller than most species, so expect to trim branches more frequently and shape the tree more often. Also, this will change the watering schedule.
Check out @bonsaisociety on facebook/insta. He is a master arborist and has a 20* year bonsai for just about every tree you could imagine! Give it a shot and don’t be dissuaded!
I have done a few and here’s some notes:
The bark will start to get some character around year 4. It’s pretty okay to let the soil dry out between waterings. Sometimes the needles will brown during winter, but it will green again when summer comes around. It needs tons of sun and is an outdoor plant. It’s really hardy. I’m pretty sure the only way to kill these things is by drowning it
3000 years to go
Anything can be turned into a bonsai.
The short version is you prune the branches and the roots, maintaining balance. Therefore it will stay the same size.
There’s more to it than that but that’s the easy version.
Yep, it just depends on difficulty, some plants are easier then others, up to you on how much maintenance you will want to deal with, you learn a lot when you challenge yourself
Any tree or woody plant can be technically.
