According to the BID, a not-for-profit organisation which aims to improve the business landscape in the area, next year will see “exciting events, continued support for businesses and vibrant new initiatives” to help the town centre thrive.

These will include the return of the much-loved World Food Festival, as well as new family-friendly entertainment, cultural showcases and seasonal celebrations “designed to keep the town buzzing all year round”.

A spokesperson for the BID said: “Despite UK-wide challenges, including changes to business rates and wider economic pressures, Welwyn Garden City continues to perform well.

“Independent businesses and major anchors such as John Lewis remain committed to the town centre and continue to trade positively.”

They also noted vacant units are at a minimum, and new opportunities continue to emerge, with interest from operators who see the town’s potential reportedly remaining strong.

The changing landscape of town centres around the country means predominantly retail-focussed high streets evolving into more diverse mixes of hospitality, leisure and experience-led businesses.

People are increasingly seeking food, culture, and social spaces alongside traditional shopping.

The spokesperson also touched on the Howard Centre, saying the retail hub is entering a period of transition.

“A new centre manager,” they said, “is driving positive change.”

“Plans are progressing to develop its leisure and hospitality offer, creating new reasons for people to visit and spend time in the town centre.”

Further updates from the Howard Centre are expected in the new year.

Celebrating what makes Welwyn Garden City special is “at the heart” of the BID’s efforts, and next year will be pivotal for the organisation, as it seeks renewal for a further five years.

Renewal would allow businesses to continue shape the town’s priorities and create a “welcoming, attractive, and lively town centre”.

“As we look ahead to 2026 and the BID’s upcoming renewal, we remain committed to collaboration, innovation, and investment.”
