Decades ago, gardeners in the Soviet Union relied on simple, resource-efficient methods to grow strong, productive tomatoes — often with limited tools, poor soil, and short growing seasons. One of those methods quietly faded away as modern gardening trends took over.
In this video, we revisit a forgotten Soviet tomato technique designed to build deep roots, reduce plant stress, and dramatically improve yields — without expensive fertilizers or complicated systems.
You’ll learn:
How this method helped tomatoes survive harsh conditions
Why it encouraged stronger root systems and healthier plants
What modern gardening lost when these techniques were abandoned
How you can still use it today in a home garden
This approach isn’t about shortcuts or chemicals. It’s about understanding how tomato plants grow and working with nature instead of forcing results.
If you grow tomatoes and want stronger plants, better harvests, and fewer problems, this forgotten method may change how you garden.

thank you for posting this. Very timely! modern gardeners need to know strategies like this to survive the uncertain future
I was doing this back in the 1980's ! Here in Canada! Now my tomato seeds over winter in the ground and grow a crazy amount of fruit! I pulled them out as weeds this past year!
The video went to a lot of explanation about planting the stems horizontally, but, only showed vertical planting,
I am from Eastern Europe. My mum planted tomatoes vertically but will berry tomato plant 90% in the soil. She said that every “hair” on tomato stem will become root. We never had to use any chemicals and plants use to look healthy all season.
A 8 minute video that could have been done in less than 2 minutes, annoying music. Swear word Swear word Swear word.
If stress weakens plants, why do pampered tomatoes collapse first?
