This is in the boreal forest of northwestern Ontario, in a fairly remote area between Red Lake and Sioux Lookout, for those curious. I was working as a tree planter. They were growing in gravel-ey soil on a slope, quite a ways above the lake visible in the background. A surprisingly dry spot! I otherwise primarily saw them growing out of sphagnum in that region. Saw the odd Sarracenia purpurea around as well when planting in bogs.
