I've put our whole veg garden to bed this winter with a thick covering of shredded leaves. A few of the beds have received compost as well, and all withered stuff and stalks are left in the ground on several beds. I am excited to see the activity next spring, compared to my "usual" compost mulch. I'd love to try mulching over winter with loads of greener / fresher stuff, but I just dont HAVE that much green/fresh in October/November when the last crops come out of the ground.
I use oak leaves where I am. My favorite thing to do is to plant potatoes into loose leaves in a pocket of compost. I mulch with shredded leaves and top with those too. Within 1 year layers of it have composted and it is beautiful and black from just leaves!
Well I accidentally sprayed a worm with bug spray the other day I'm VERY upset about it. Did you all know bug spray is bad for worms? Because I didn't.
