Help! Mold is growing on my tubers constantly. They’re stored in plastic bags with vermiculite, the bags are kept open and in plastic storage bins with the lid off in my garage. The garage temperature varies between 30-40 degrees usually and it’s humid in the garage. Is there any other way that could work to store them? I keep brushing the mold off but it’s gotten to the point where that isn’t sustainable, I’m in a new space so jut trying to find the best way to store them.

This is an automatic reminder regarding r/dahlias Rule 3:
When reasonable*, posters should make a good-faith effort to identify which variety/varieties are shown in their photo(s). If you don’t know for certain, please say so. Someone will usually know!
*Common-sense exceptions to this rule will be honored, such as if the photo does not contain a blossom, or if your photo contains large volumes (such as in wide field shots).
If you’ve already done this, thank you! No further action required.
If not, please add a reply to this comment and confirm if you know the name of your dahlia variety/varieties shown in the photo(s). Alternately, if you’re uncertain of the variety name(s), it’s ok to say that, too.

My understanding is you need to really submerge them- this doesn’t look like enough vermiculite to me!!
I never keep the mother tuber on, and I usually separate the individual tubers. The mother tuber uses all its nutrients and rots quicker, any little rot will spread quickly when still attached in a cluster s such.
If it’s humid you might want to go with a “drier” storage method- maybe paper bags instead of plastic? You can also spray them with Lysol to kill the mold (this was told to me by people running a dahlia society).
